Blast
Synopsis
This one-day course is intended for practising engineers who wish to gain an insight into current methods of structural analysis and design against blast loads. The course will show how significant blast resilience and resistance is possible with careful design, planning and detailing of a structure. The course will commence with blast load evaluation for detonations both outside and inside buildings and the problems of load quantification in complex urban geometries. Then, structural response to blast loading will be addressed with reference to ‘equivalent single degree of freedom’ analysis and the development of pressure-impulse diagrams for response assessment. Case histories of building response to blast will be presented. This will be followed by an outline of the principles and guidelines for protective design against the effects of blast including discussion of suitable materials for protective design, dynamic design in reinforced concrete and the approach adopted by the main design documents. Finally, the course will address practical design and the application of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) technical guidelines regarding the structural design of blast resistant facilities.
Speakers
This course will be presented by Bob Shelton (Senior Lecturer in Protective Structures, Cranfield University at the Defence Academy) and Piroozan Aminossehe (Independent Consultant).
