Earthquake Engineering in Taiwan: From Field to Future

Synopsis

This talk explores earthquake engineering in Taiwan, situated in one of the world’s most seismically active regions. It brings together experimental research, engineering practice and observations from field investigations following the 2024 Hualien earthquake in Taiwan and the 2025 Myanmar earthquake. The presentation examines how lessons from earthquake damage can inform seismic design and assessment. It also introduces emerging applications of AI and approaches to carbon reduction in earthquake engineering, alongside advances in eco-efficient and high-performance construction materials and sensing technologies. The talk highlights how these approaches can support the development of safer, more resilient and lower-carbon structures.

About the speaker

Dr Terry Y. P. Yuen is an Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, and a Chartered Structural Engineer (CEng MIStructE). His research focuses on earthquake engineering, low-carbon construction materials, optical-fibre sensing and high-fidelity nonlinear simulation. He has led or co-led international research projects supported by the Royal Society and EPSRC (UK), NRC (Canada), and NSTC (Taiwan). He serves on Taiwan’s Reinforced Concrete Design Code Committee and the Institution of Structural Engineers’ Seismic and Dynamic Events Panel.  His major academic awards include the 2014 ICE Telford Premium, the 2016 HKIE Best Transactions Prize, the 2017 HKIE–IStructE Grand Structural Excellence Award (R&D), and the 2024 HKIE Structural Excellence Awards (R&D) Commendation Merit Award.
