Seismic Design of Timber Buildings: The New Eurocode 8 and Cross-Laminated Timber


A large overhaul of Eurocode 8 is currently underway, and the chapter on design of timber structures has been extensively revised, taking it from six pages in the 2004 version to almost 40 pages in the latest draft. The speakers have all been heavily involved in the research work underpinning the new timber chapter, as well as the drafting of the new text. In this talk, they will share some of the major developments in seismic design of timber buildings, and how they are reflected in the new code.

Of particular recent interest are cross-laminated timber (CLT) structures, developed in Germany and Austria in the 1990s, and now used worldwide, including in seismic zones. Aside from benefits in short construction time, and sustainability, CLT buildings can perform in a very ductile manner if properly designed, including a proper capacity design hierarchy. The speakers will also share results from their research on seismic performance of CLT buildings, including capacity design principles and analytical modelling approaches.

About the speakers

Prof. Massimo Fragiacomo is Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of l'Aquila. He has previously worked at the University of Trieste, Italy, University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and the University of Sassari, Italy. His main areas of expertise include Timber and Earthquake Engineering. Massimo has published 160+ papers in International journals, and 200+ in proceedings of Conferences, and for his research work has received some awards including the Frederick Palmer Prize offered by the Institution of Civil Engineers – UK in 2012. He is the convenor of CEN/TC250/SC8/WG3 subgroup on Seismic Resistance of Timber Structures.

Dr Daniele Casagrande is a researcher at the Institute for Bioeconomy of the National Research Council of Italy. He has been working, within national and international collaborations, on the proposal of simplified analytical and numerical approaches for the seismic analysis of timber buildings. In his career, he has actively participated in the design, execution and post-process analysis of full-scale laboratory tests on mechanical connections, timber shear walls and shake table tests of three 3-storey houses. As expert member of the Italian Committee for timber structures, Dr. Casagrande has been participating at the working group CEN/TC250/SC8/WG3 for the revision of section “timber structure” of Eurocode 8.

Dr Maurizio Follesa is a consulting engineer and founding partner of dedaLEGNO, a design studio located in Florence, Italy and specialized in structural design of multi-storey timber buildings. He was former research associate at the Trees and Timber Institute (now Institute for Bioeconomy) of the National Research Council of Italy where he conducted research on the structural, fire and seismic behaviour of full-scale CLT buildings tested in Japan within an international research cooperation between Italian and Japanese research institutes and universities. He’s adjunct professor of “Design of timber structures” at Roma Tre University and member of the European Standardization Committee CEN/TC250/SC8/WG3 which is dealing with the revision of the chapter for the seismic design of timber buildings of Eurocode 8.
