Pushing Boundaries: The Role of Nonlinear Response History Analysis in Seismic Design

Synopsis
In seismic design, understanding the complex behaviour of structures under earthquake loading is crucial for ensuring safety and resilience. Nonlinear response history analysis (NRHA) is now established as a powerful tool unlocking the potential of seismic performance. This presentation explores the importance of NRHA in seismic design, highlighting its ability to accurately predict structural responses. We will discuss how NRHA is opening new avenues for the development of innovative seismic systems and materials, enabling engineers to design structures that not only withstand earthquakes but also optimize performance and cost-efficiency. Through case studies and recent advancements, we will illustrate the transformative potential of NRHA in shaping the future of seismic engineering.

About the speakers
David Shook
David is an Associate Principal with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, in San Francisco. His work has spanned structural topics as diverse as long-span post-tensioned floor systems, seismic performance,  and sustainability. His design experience includes large-scale iconic international towers. He is a frequent lecturer on the topics of sustainability, performance- based seismic design, and integrated practice design. David is a co-author of a book published by the CTBUH bringing performance-based design principles to an international audience. David has utilized the concepts of performance-based seismic design to enable new architecture which engage the social fabric of our urban centers.

Ricardo Henoch
Ricardo is an Associate Principal with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, San Francisco. His work has spanned through concrete and steel research, with seismic performance and extreme loads analysis and design. His design experience includes tall towers in China, residential buildings in high seismic regions in the West-Coast of the US, retrofit historical buildings, among others. He was part of EERI group to evaluate the performance of Hospitals in the Turkey earthquake of 2023.
