Notification of upcoming SECED YMSC Elections 2023

More than 4 nominations have been received for the SECED Young Members Subcommittee vacancies, therefore an election will be held. The election will be conducted through Choice Voting. Eligible voters will receive an email on Monday 9 October 2023 from This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. which will contain a link to the online ballot form. Voting will close at 6PM on Tuesday 24 October 2023.

Yazan Asia

I am a passionate and energetic engineer and readily take up opportunities to develop myself. I was elected as President of the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2017/2018, after being Treasurer in 2016/2017, when the student branch was awarded two distinguished prizes.  Currently doing a PhD in Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Cambridge, funded by Cambridge Trust. In 2021, I was awarded a Master's in Earthquake Engineering and Infrastructure Resilience at the University of Bristol, with a Distinction classification, funded by the Chevening Scholarship. I was ranked as the fifth top graduate student in the Civil Engineering Department during my undergraduate course.

I have been a co-opted member the past year where I helped with co-editing the quarterly newsletter of the society. I would like to continue working on the newsletter to disseminate information to other young members and foster greater knowledge share. I am also eager to meet other young professionals and work with them closely over the next two years.

Fernando Gutierrez Urzua

I am a Civil Engineer with 10+ years of experience in structural, earthquake, and risk engineering, both as practitioner and researcher. My work focuses on innovative structural seismic-resilient solutions, risk-based design and assessment tools. As a member of the committee, my contribution will include co-organising and promoting SECED events, and creating collaborative spaces where young members and students can connect with experienced practitioners and researchers.

Nurullah Bektas

Széchenyi István University

Nurullah Bektaş, a PhD candidate in Structural Engineering and Geotechnics at Széchenyi István University in Hungary, specializes in seismic risk reduction and Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) of existing buildings. With BSc and MSc degrees in Civil Engineering from İzmir Institute of Technology, he's received prestigious scholarships and awards. His current research focuses on advancing RVS methods using AI algorithms. As a Research Assistant, he teaches courses and mentors students at Széchenyi István University. Nurullah actively participates in professional organizations, contributing to post-earthquake site investigations and reports.

I am an Assistant Engineer at AtkinsRéalis, having graduated from Imperial College with an MEng in Civil Engineering. My experience is primarily in the nuclear sector, with a focus on structural dynamics, seismic design, in-structure shock and FEA. I’m enthusiastic to contribute to SECED, as this position allows the perfect opportunity to learn from and actively involve myself in a community of like-minded individuals and influence this discipline’s future.

Daniel Gilmore

I am a Chartered Structural Analyst at Sellafield Ltd, undertaking FEA in static, seismic and thermal analysis of new and existing nuclear structures, in addition to undertaking structural designs of new nuclear builds. I would like to stand for the YM subcommittee both to represent the nuclear decommissioning industry, and to promote collaboration across the wider dynamics community, particularly between industry and academia on seismic analysis.

I am Hang Li, a geotechnical engineer having been working in Atkins for two years. I have more-than-one-year experience in civil structure design, and I am currently working for Sizewell C nuclear project in seismic and soil structure interaction analyses using FLAC3D.
I graduated from the University of Sheffield with PhD and MSc degrees. I have strong capabilities in numerical modelling using open-source DEM and commercial FEM techniques.

Zeyad Khalil

Imperial College London

Zeyad is a PhD scholar at Imperial College London. He obtained his MSc degree in Earthquake Engineering with Distinction from Imperial and his BSc degree in Civil Engineering from the German University in Cairo. Zeyad’s research focuses on the seismic risk assessment of offshore wind farms and fatigue-induced fracture in steel components. By being part of the SECED YMSC, Zeyad aims at helping to develop a strong active network of the society’s young members.

Ludovica Pieroni

University College London

My name is Ludovica Pieroni and I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Structural and Earthquake Engineering at University College London. I obtained my Bachelor's and Master's in Civil Engineering in Italy, and I was a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University. My research focuses on low-damage systems to reduce the effects of earthquakes on the built environment. As passionate about Earthquake Engineering, I am thrilled about the opportunity to serve YMSC.

This election will be held online. Access to the internet and a working email address are prerequisites for participation in the election. The eligible voters are those members of the Society that qualify as Young Members at the time of the election. All eligible voters will receive a link to the online ballot form via email. Please note that SECED individual members are responsible for keeping their email addresses up-to-date, and SECED corporate members are responsible for keeping the list of nominated representatives up-to-date, including their email addresses.
