Heavy Machinery Foundation Design Subject to Vibration

Aims

This three day evening course is intended for practising engineers who wish to gain an insight into current methods of heavy machinery foundation design against vibration. The course will show how to design machinery foundations to ensure that the amplitude of the displacement responses, which are induced by the machinery dynamic loads, are limited to the allowable limit so that do not have any adverse effects on the machine’s performance and integrity as well as any severe or troublesome effects on people working in the vicinity of the machines. The course will commence with an introduction to structural and soil dynamics. Then, foundation response to vibration loading will be addressed with reference to ‘lumped parameter system’ idealisation and the development of dynamic loads exerted by machineries including rotating machines as well as reciprocating machines’ primary and secondary dynamic forces for response assessment followed by modelling of machineries on pile foundations.

About the speaker

Piroozan Aminossehe is an independent consultant. He has extensive experience of analysis and design of heavy complex structures subjected to dynamic loads particularly seismic ground motion and soil structure interaction. He had a key role in the seismic analysis and design of Sizewell ‘B’ nuclear power station as head of the analytical group and many other major projects in nuclear and petrochemical industries. He served as an elected member of Council of the Institution 2008-2010 as well as Chairman of IStructE North Thames Region in 2013. He also runs biennial Blast course at UCL and biennial Seismic course at Imperial College.
