Seismic design of structures to Eurocode 8

Overview

This two-day course focusses on the seismic design of structures to Eurocode 8. The course is aimed at professional civil engineers interested in seismic design of structures with a focus on buildings and bridges. It consists of a total of 8 lectures and covers the basics of structural dynamics and engineering seismology, which are necessary for understanding the background of seismic design provisions of modern codes, as well as a number of selected advanced topics, such as seismic design of buildings and bridges to Eurocode 8 (for different ductility classes), and base isolation of structures. People having attended the course will be able to apply Eurocode 8 to the seismic design of buildings and bridges.

About the tutors

The course tutors are Prof. Andreas J Kappos, Dr Agathoklis Giaralis and Prof Ashraf Ayoub all from the School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering at City. All tutors are experts in Earthquake Engineering, Structural Dynamics, and Seismic Design of Structures. The course coordinator has also extensive experience in Eurocode 8 as he was a member of the Project Team that prepared the final draft of the Code, and he is currently the Chairman of the BSI Comm. B/525/8 Working Groups for Eurocode 8 Parts 2 and 3, as well as a member of B/525/8. He has also long-time experience in teaching Eurocode 8 related courses in the UK, Greece, and The Netherlands.

All three tutors are currently active in research related to Earthquake Engineering and have published extensively in the field (see publications and citations of Kappos, Giaralis, and Ayoub). They also have significant experience in seismic design of structures (buildings, bridges, and special types of civil engineering structures).
