Seismic Hazard Assessment for Nuclear Facilities

Synopsis

For the second event held by the SECED Young Members, we aim to highlight the role of young professionals in the nuclear industry working in the field of seismic hazard assessments for safety critical facilities.

The first talk by Manuela Villani presents a probabilistic seismic hazard assesment for a nuclear facility in the UK focussing on the characterisation of the seismic source model and ground model attenuation in low-to-moderate seismicity context.

The second talk by Manuela Daví will address quality assurance (QA) procedures implemented by Jacobs (formerly CH2M) for the verification of probabilistic seismic hazard calculations and validation of the seismic hazard computation software for safety critical infrastructure, where a high level of regulatory assurance is required.

About the speakers

Manuela Villani is a senior engineering seismologist in Arup’s London office. Her specialist skills include probabilistic seismic hazard assesment (PSHA), ground motion attenuation models, site response analysis and numerical analyses of earthquake ground motion. Manuela completed her PhD in engineering seismology and earthquake engineering at Rose School in Pavia (Italy) in 2010. Manuela has worked as a seismic hazard analyst for numerous seismic hazard studies including LNG plants, nuclear power plants and other critical structures in Italy, the UK and worldwide. Manuela maintains a state-of-the-art knowledge of seismic hazard through links with academic world in Italy and USA. Her research mainly focuses on the injection into the SHA of deterministically computed ground motion values and on non-ergodic PSHA.

Manuela Daví is a chartered civil engineer at Jacobs (previously CH2M), specialising in seismic hazard assessment and geotechnical earthquake engineering. Since completing her MSc at Politecnico di Milano in 2008, she has worked on a wide range of projects, from seismic design of major infrastructure in areas of high seismicity to probabilistic seismic hazard assessments for nuclear facilities. Before moving to CH2M (now Jacobs) in 2012, she spent four years at Studio Geotecnico Italiano in Milan and was a trainee for 6 months at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia in Milan.
